Stay safe
Coin keeps your payments private. Keeping your coins safe is up to you, and it comes down to a few simple habits.
The golden ruleYour 25 words and your private keys are the only things that can spend your coins. Never share them, never type them into a website, and never store them where someone else could read them.
Scams to watch for
- Fake support. Coin has no help desk that needs your seed. Anyone who asks for it, in a chat, an email or a "support form", is trying to rob you.
- Fake wallets. Download Coin only from this site, and check the file's hash before you run it.
- Giveaways and doublers. Nobody sends back twice what you send them.
- Websites that mine for you. Mining runs in the COIN Wallet, on your own computer. A website or "cloud mining" contract that promises Coin is not part of Coin.
- Address swapping. Some malware replaces an address you copy with its own. After you paste, check the first and last few characters.
Check every download
Each release is published with its SHA-256 hash. Compare it with your file before you open it, every time you update. It takes a minute: see the guides for Windows and Linux.
Protect the wallet on your computer
- Give the wallet a strong password, and don't reuse one from elsewhere.
- Keep your computer's system updates turned on.
- Lock the wallet when you step away: Settings > Wallet > Lock this wallet. It can also lock itself after a few idle minutes, under Settings > Interface.
If you think someone has seen your seed
Move your coins straight away. Create a new wallet with a new seed, write the new words down, then send everything from the old wallet to an address in the new one. Once the payment confirms, the old seed is worthless to whoever saw it.
