Guide for merchants

Accept COIN payments

Take payments for goods, services or donations. Give each customer their own address and every payment is easy to match, while your sales stay private.

One address per customer

  1. Open Receive and press Create new address.

  2. Label it with the order number or the customer's name. Only you can see the label.

  3. Give the customer that address. Their payment shows up against it in Transactions.

Every address pays into the same wallet. On the blockchain, none of them can be linked to each other or to you, and no customer can look up what the others paid.

Ask for an exact amount

On the Receive page, fill in the payment request: the amount, what it's for and your name or shop. The wallet turns it into a QR code the customer can scan, with the amount already filled in.

Watch payments arrive

Merchant mode turns the wallet into a simple point-of-sale screen. Open Settings > Wallet > Enter merchant mode. It shows a QR code for the selected address and the amount to receive, and lists incoming payments as soon as the network sees them.

When is a payment final?About 2 minutes per block
  • SeenWaiting for a block. It will almost always confirm, but it isn't certain yet. Accepting it is your call, so keep it for small amounts.
  • 1 confirmationIn a block. Each new block on top makes it harder to undo.
  • 10 confirmationsAbout 20 minutes. The coins unlock and you can spend them.

For larger amounts, wait for more confirmations before you hand over the goods.

Settle disputes without opening your books

If a customer says they paid, ask for a payment proof. Your wallet checks it against the blockchain and shows exactly what that one transaction paid to your address. Nothing else is revealed on either side.

Show your accountant, not your keys

A view key lets your accountant or auditor see your incoming payments in a view-only wallet. It can't spend anything.

Advanced: integrated addresses and the wallet RPC

Integrated addresses

An integrated address is your address with a short payment ID built in, so one address can tell many payments apart. The command-line wallet makes one with integrated_address. Separate addresses are simpler and are what the wallet gives you by default. Integrated addresses are there for systems built around payment IDs.

Automate it with the wallet RPC server

Shops can let their checkout talk to the wallet RPC server, which comes with the Linux download. Make a fresh address for each order:

{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":"0","method":"create_address","params":{"account_index":0,"label":"order-1042"}}

Then list incoming payments with their amounts and confirmations:

{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":"0","method":"get_transfers","params":{"in":true}}

Keep the wallet RPC server on a private address. Anyone who can reach it can use the wallet.
