Build COIN from source

Coin is open source. Build it yourself and you know exactly what you're running.

These steps are for Ubuntu. The source includes build instructions for other Linux systems, Windows and macOS.

  1. Install the build tools

    $ sudo apt update && sudo apt install build-essential cmake pkg-config libssl-dev libzmq3-dev libunbound-dev libsodium-dev libunwind8-dev liblzma-dev libreadline6-dev libexpat1-dev libpgm-dev qttools5-dev-tools libhidapi-dev libusb-1.0-0-dev libprotobuf-dev protobuf-compiler libudev-dev libboost-chrono-dev libboost-date-time-dev libboost-filesystem-dev libboost-locale-dev libboost-program-options-dev libboost-regex-dev libboost-serialization-dev libboost-system-dev libboost-thread-dev python3 ccache doxygen graphviz
  2. Get the source

    $ git clone --recursive REPOSITORY_URL

    Use the address behind View source on the Download page in place of REPOSITORY_URL, then cd into the folder it creates. The --recursive option fetches the libraries Coin bundles.

  3. Build it

    $ make

    The first build takes a while. To use more processor cores, run make -j4 instead, with the number of threads you want to use.

  4. Run it

    The programs end up in build/release/bin. Start coind from there and carry on with the Linux guide from step 4.

Check what you built

A node you build yourself joins the same network as the released one, starting from the same genesis block. Its message reads Coin | RandomX-v2 | mainnet | 2026-10-20. About the genesis block »
